Athletics Wicklow Indoor Championships 2026: A Celebration of Talent and Club Spirit

The Athletics Wicklow Indoor Track & Field Championships 2026 took place on 10 January at the National Indoor Arena, Abbotstown, delivering a full day of competition, excitement, and community spirit. Athletes from across Wicklow, from the youngest Under 8s to Senior and Masters competitors, took part in a wide-ranging programme of track and field events, showcasing the depth of talent across the county.

Celebrating the Youngest Athletes – A Perfect Start
The championships got underway with the Under 8 to Under 11 Awards Scheme, setting a positive and inclusive tone for the day. Gold, silver and bronze awards were presented to athletes from clubs across the county, recognising enthusiasm, participation and effort. The smiles and excitement around the arena highlighted the importance of enjoyment and confidence-building at these early stages.

Field Events Full of Quality and Variety
The field programme produced numerous strong performances across all age groups. In the throws, Sophia Snell (Under 13) recorded an excellent winning distance in the shot put, while Aoife Brock (Under 16) stood out with victories in both the shot put and long jump, highlighting her versatility.
The long jump competitions were particularly competitive. Niamh Graham (Under 14) produced a strong winning jump to add to her success on the track, while Lyla Cherry Kinito (Under 15) impressed with a confident series of jumps to secure gold.
In the high jump, Rachel Carley (Under 14) cleared a notable winning height, and Malik Doyle Shahin (Under 17) delivered one of the standout field performances of the championships with a confident and controlled victory.

Fast Starts and Strong Finishes on the Track
Sprint events provided plenty of excitement, particularly in the 60m and 200m races. In the younger age groups, Kornelia Naroznik (Under 12) impressed with a double success, taking victory in both the 60m and the long jump, while Ella Glennon (Under 13) continued her strong indoor form with a win in the 60m.
At Under 15 level, Bronagh Healy produced a standout sprint performance in the 60m, while Holly Johnston (Under 16) delivered one of the fastest sprint displays of the day, combining a 60m win with victory in the 200m.
Middle-distance events were a major highlight. Jessica O’Connor (Under 16) showed excellent range with wins in both the 400m and 800m, while Ella Breen (Under 17) impressed across the 200m and 800m, demonstrating strength and tactical awareness.
At older age groups, Róisín Murray (Under 19) stood out with commanding performances in both the 200m and 800m, while Rosanna Hickey took Senior honours over 800m and 1500m.
Inclusive and Welcoming Competition
The championships also showcased the inclusive nature of Athletics Wicklow. Seated and adaptive events were fully integrated into the programme, with strong support from athletes and spectators alike. These moments reflected the welcoming environment that continues to define Wicklow athletics competitions.

Clubs Working Together, Athletes Shining
Athletes from Bray Runners, Kilcoole, Inbhear Dee, Greystones, Lakeshore Striders, Parnell, Roundwood, St Benedict Inbhear Mor, and Tomnafinnogue were prominent throughout the day. The support from coaches, officials, volunteers and parents ensured a smooth-running and highly positive championship atmosphere.
A Positive Start to the 2026 Season
The 2026 Indoor Championships provided an excellent start to the athletics year in Wicklow. With strong participation, impressive performances across all age groups, and a supportive, inclusive environment, the event reflected the depth of talent and commitment throughout the county.
