Schools shine at Wicklow Mile Challenge

Hundreds of young runners from across County Wicklow took part in this year’s Athletics Wicklow Mile Challenge, with an impressive 678 primary school athletes competing earlier in the day before the secondary school races brought an exciting day of competition to a close.

Despite some impressive performances on the day, no athlete managed to break the coveted sub-5-minute mile and claim the elusive purple wristband at this year’s Athletics Wicklow Mile Challenge. The fastest times of the day were recorded by Eoghan O’Reilly (Glenart) and Fiónn York Keogh (Avondale Community College), who both clocked excellent times of 5 minutes and 4 seconds, coming agonisingly close to the target.

Not at all phased by the rain, athletes from schools across the county showed great determination and enthusiasm as they lined out in large numbers for the popular annual event held in Avondale.

Primary Schools Lead the Way

The morning session featured races for 3rd to 6th class, with schools from Greystones, Wicklow Town, Rathdrum, Kilmacanogue and beyond represented.

Among the winners were Aoise McFadden (Glebe N.S.) in the 3rd Class Girls race and Ben McNally (St. Patrick’s N.S., Greystones) in the 3rd Class Boys event.

In the 4th Class races, victories went to Mya Milsana (Greystones Community N.S.) and Fionn Redmond (Rathdrum B.N.S.), while Louisa Martin (Nuns Cross N.S.) and Rowan Geraghty (St. Laurence’s N.S., Greystones) claimed top honours in the 5th Class competitions.

The 6th Class races were won by Kayla Cassidy (St. Mary’s Senior N.S.) and Devin Sheehan (Rathdrum B.N.S.), rounding off a fantastic morning of racing.

Strong Performances in Secondary Races

The afternoon programme featured races for secondary school athletes across all year groups.

Bronagh Healy (St Mary’s Arklow) won the 1st Year Girls race, while Ethan Forde (Glenart) took victory in the 1st Year Boys.

In the 2nd Year events, Ciara Winterbotham (Avondale Community College) and Eoghan O’Reilly (Glenart) were the winners, with O’Reilly recording the joint fastest time of the day in 5:04.

The 3rd Year races were won by Layla Dixon (Gaelcholáiste na Mara) and Tommy Dillon (Arklow CBS).

The senior events brought the day to a close with Lara Buck (Coláiste Raithín) winning the Senior Girls race and Fiónn York Keogh (Avondale Community College) matching the fastest time of the day with 5:04 to win the Senior Boys.

A Community Effort

While the rain made conditions challenging throughout the day, the atmosphere remained positive and supportive, with athletes, schools and spectators embracing the occasion.

A huge thank you goes to all the volunteers, teachers and parents who braved a very rainy day at Avondale to help make the event possible. Their support ensured the Mile Challenge once again proved a memorable and successful day for young athletes across the county.

This event was also the first schools competition organised by the new committee, who would like to acknowledge the tremendous work done over many years by Noreen O’Reilly, Theresa Kinane and Annemarie Kelly. Their commitment and dedication were instrumental in getting the Wicklow schools athletics events up and running, and the new committee would like to extend their heartfelt thanks for passing on their knowledge, experience and advice as the baton is handed over.
